Epsom hockey skipper James Midmer has thrown in the towel on any hopes of promotion, but he remains positive going forward.

The side are third in the Hants/Surrey Regional Division One, 12 points behind leaders Winchester and seven behind second place Woking with six games remaining.

Midmer conceded it was unlikely they would finish top, but wants to finish as strong as possible.

He said: “I don’t think we’ll be able to finish top, Winchester have been good all season and will be difficult to catch.

“We’ve played well in the past few weeks and we’ve got some good results, there’s no reason we can’t keep on to second or aim for third.”

Epsom are coming off the back of a 9-0 victory over bottom of the table Yateley.

Midmer bagged a brace, Scott Barton hit four and Mike Atkinson, Alex Pizzey and Steve Turnbull also got on the scoresheet in the resounding win.

Among the goals: James Midmer bagged a brace in Saturday's big win over Yateley

He said: “It’s always nice to score and we’ve got a couple of players throughout the team who have kept scoring in the past few weeks.

“It was a good victory and a good team performance in general, that’s always pleasing.”

Epsom go to Hamble this weekend and, even though the side are in the bottom half of the table, Midmer knows the side are in for a test.

He said: “Hamble gave us a tough game last time we played them.

“We’ve just got to try and keep playing in the same way to keep our recent form going.”
