Mayoral support: Councillor Stuart Thom showed his support

Hosted by everyone's favourite grumpy man Arthur Smith, those in attendance included the likes of Bridget Christie, Stewart Lee, Mackenzie Crook and Tim Key.

The unforgettable night of live entertainment was hosted by the Southwark Centre to raise money for the arts centre, which was damaged by a fire last month.

The Battersea Arts Centre's Beatbox Academy wowed the crowds and poetry had people rolling in the aisles and wiping a tear from their faces.

It was a particularly emotional moment when chief executive David Jubb announced the Battersea Arts Centre would be back in all its glory, thanks in no small part to the outpouring of donated support.

Saturday's event raised another £30,000 for the cause and took the centre past £750,000 for its £1m target.

The evening was the brainchild of Stewart Lee and was suggested only hours after the fire destroyed a third of the building on March 13.

Music was provided by Kneehigh Band, BAC Beatbox Academy as well as numbers from Jerry Springer: The Opera.

Wandsworth Guardian editor David Rankin, who attended the fundraiser, said: "It was a night that really had it all. There were laughs aplenty, some astonishing performances and some truly moving contributions and an ovation for all the staff at Battersea Arts Centre.

"Seeing some of the talent the centre has produced really brought home how important it is to the Battersea and wider community."

All proceeds from the event will help the arts centre tackle the challenge of losing its largest space, the Grand Hall, for up to three years.
