A Wandsworth councillor is stocking up on woolly hats as she prepares to shave her hair off for Cancer Research.

Latchmere councillor Wendy Speck was inspired by friends and family members suffering from cancer to get rid of her dark locks and make money for charity.

Coun Speck, 64, a former primary school headteacher and grandmother, said: "Several friends and family have suffered from or are suffering from cancer and, in the past, a couple of friends also died from it.

"My mother-in -law died from breast cancer many years ago. My mum had cancer in the 1980s, recovered, but now has terminal cancer. Several friends and colleagues are suffering at the moment."

The event is set to take place on December 2, at Chesterton Primary School, Battersea, where Coun Speck is the chairwoman of governors.

Coun Speck, who lives in Queenstown, added: "At first I thought about doing it in assembly but we thought the children might get a bit creeped out about it and decided to do it in the staff room.

"I have been talking about it for a few months. It sounds crazy doing it in winter - but the logic is I can wear hats in the winter, woolly hats, and my hair will start to grow before it gets too hot.

"I am nervous about it. I had it cut short about three weeks ago so I got used to it being short."
