A charity fundraiser has been launched in memory of an "inspirational" former headmaster who was "taken too early".

Gil Dunn died on February 13 aged 72 after suffering from Multiple System Atrophy (MSA).

By the end of his life Gil could neither walk nor talk but died with former staff from Manor Lodge School by his side.

Paula Barden, former school secretary, said it was "rare to find someone like him".

Born in Liverpool, Mr Dunn moved down south as a child with his parents before training as a teacher at Bletchley Park and took up teaching English and Sport.

Mr Dunn worked at Lochniver School, Potters Bar and then moved to the newly established Manor Lodge School in the early 1990s.

He became head teacher for the last seven years before he retired in summer 2019.

"Gil didn't have any family at all," said Paula. "I worked for him at Manor Lodge where the teachers, staff and children were his family."

She added: "He taught English and sport and was a published author of children's books. He had a very keen interest in cowboys and the cowboy era."

He wrote all the "incredible" end of year productions which fellow Year 6 teachers Elaine Heartland and Sue Byrom produced and Kathryn Fillipines put to music.

Paula said a donation link was set up to aid research into MSA as so little is known.

"MSA is like parkinson's but worse. He was struggling for last couple of years. He stopped walking last year and was struggling to talk.

He just had this spirit in him , he was just incredible, he was such an incredible gentleman, it was rare to find somebody like him."

She added: "He was an inspirational presence and the school thrived under his direction and management.

"He was loved by the children and respected by the whole school community.  His knowledge, experience and caring nature leave a huge void.

"Gil was, and always will be, close to our hearts and remembered by all as a truly inspirational gentleman who changed so many lives. Gil, you are already greatly missed."
